May 21st marks the 2011 series opener for the RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATION at Thompson Raceway Park in Thompson, Oh. The series caters to street-type vehicles with 2 heads-up style index classes and 1 heads-up class pitting drag radial tires vs true 10 inch tires. The RENEGADE RACING ASSOCIATION has grown in popularity with both fans and its competitors due to its close 'Heads-up style' racing and the excitement of street racing [though now held at the track]. The May 21st race is held in conjunction with TRP's Asphalt Wars program which includes PRO-MODS and fast dragsters as well as their normal bracket racing program.

The Shearer-Fab 8.90 index and the RENEGADE 10.50 index classes are for street-type vehicle [domestic and metric] with no tire restrictions and no 'bracket type' electronics permitted, bringing driver skill and hands-on fine tuning back into index racing.

The Street Lethal Performance OUTLAW LIMITED STREET is the home of big horsepower and little tires competing in an 1/8 mile format, pitting nitrous vs. turbo vs. supercharged in a first to the finish battle.

Series supporters include Ultra Tech Racecars, Goodyear, TI Dyno, Skippy Did It Race Cars, Johnboy Photography, Abruzzi Racing Transmissions, Chumley Motorsports, CP Auto Graphics, Burt Brown Racing Transmissions, Quarter Mile Finish, EZ Plate Systems, Mickey Thompson Tires, Shearer-Fabrications, and Street Lethal Performance.

No, it's cancelled. It gives folks a chance to make other plans this way.

Once a event has been cancelled, it's not like throwing a switch if the weather gets nice and say the race is back on. The track manager/promoter has many things to consider. Usually at a bigger meet he brings in more workers, there is the expense of treating the strip further down track, more food has to be ordered and more workers in the concession stands might be needed. Plus, the insurance cost to the track varies by what type of program they hold. The weekly bracket race is one price, but when you bring in high powered cars, the premium for that day increases. This is one of the reasons the admission price is higher so the overhead can be met and have the track still make a profit. The track is a business and needs to make a profit or it goes under.
So you have to think about what it takes to have a succesful day for the track, and it's not easy trying to make a profit especially with the weather we're having.

I may be wrong, but the deciding factor for the cancellation was not the racing surface so much as the rest of the facility. Last year was packed a few times with just the Asphalt Wars and 8.90. Now there's those two plus 10.50 and OLS. I don't think Jim wanted to force people into the grass which is soaked and create mud everywhere. He wants everyone to have a good experience at the track, not have to pull out trucks and trailers all night long after racing is done. Can't blame him at all for that.

Don, you're correct in why Jim cancelled the event. I think it was maybe 2-3 years ago when Thompson hosted the last IHRA Pro-Am event and it was early in the season. Again, there was a lot of rain and cars were getting stuck in the pit areas as were spectators cars.
The track surface was never in question for this Asphalt Wars/Renegade race, but I have a feeling when the sun starts hitting that dark surface, it'll start wicking water up through the track. We saw that last year when cars were making passes and you could see a mist coming off the tires and the Racepak confirmed tire slippage.
